Above Alan

A Fish Tale About Curiosity and the Unknown

Above Alan is my graduation film from the MA in Animation at the Royal College of Art in London. Set in an underwater world, it follows Alan, an ordinary fish who dares to question what lies beyond the surface. Leaving behind the safety of school life, he sets off on a journey to discover the truth about what’s “above.”

Along the way, Alan encounters a series of characters—each convinced they hold the answer. Their conflicting beliefs and attempts to impose their versions of the truth gradually shape, challenge, and distort his quest. What begins as an innocent pursuit of knowledge becomes a surreal and unsettling odyssey, culminating in a darker, more ambiguous ending.

One of the film’s most meaningful moments features a 2,000-year-old Roman mosaic from Pompeii, depicting a sea life scene. I sourced the artwork from the Archaeological Museum of Naples and brought it to life through modern animation techniques, a deeply rewarding fusion of ancient art and contemporary motion.
